Remove Asbestos in Edmonton

For several decades asbestos has been a commonly used product in both residential and commercial buildings across Alberta. Asbestos is extremely hazardous to handle during renovations, construction or demolition. When you disturb asbestos containing materials, the fiber gets in the air and is circulated throughout the property. Prolonged exposure to the mineral can lead to several illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. That’s why its crucial to hire a contractor that has the experience and expertise to rectify the problem.

At Kalloway, we offer on-site damage assessments to identify the affected materials, and provide a comprehensive remediation plan to restore your property to a safe and clean condition.

Asbestos is a fibrous material used in building products from the 1930’s to the late 1980’s. It is often found in drywall compound, lath/plaster, duct wrap insulation, floor tiles, attic insulation, linoleum flooring, ceiling stipple, exterior stucco and various other products. Current legislation requires that testing must be performed to ensure the health and safety of workers.

Asbestos is dangerous when airborne fibers are inhaled. It is a category 1 carcinogen, meaning it can cause cancer, especially lung cancer and mesothelioma. Construction projects are especially dangerous because removing asbestos can disturb the fibers. You should always hire a professional to safely remove asbestos.

Asbestos may be found in duct tape (often white in color) on your ducting, floor tiles, sheet vinyl flooring, attic insulation, old pipes, plaster, drywall putty, shingles, and many other products. If you suspect that you may be dealing with asbestos, do not disturb it. Call a professional!

Canada was once a world leader in asbestos production. While its use in homes was banned in 1979, asbestos products can be found in buildings constructed as late as the early 1990s.

While it is possible to test for asbestos yourself, doing so can be risky. In order to get a sample to test, you may have to disturb the asbestos fibers, potentially causing exposure. Even then, the kit may no be as reliable as having professionals do the job. Kalloway can professionally test for asbestos and deal with it safely.

Asbestos is dangerous when it is friable, meaning is can be easily crumbled, which can release fibers into the surrounding air. Once in this state, asbestos can be breathed into the lungs or swallowed to reach the digestive tract. Because the asbestos is difficult to break down, it remains in the body and causes disease.

Not all old tile or sheet flooring contained asbestos. But a significant quantity did. You may suspect that you are dealing with asbestos tile if your structure was built prior to 1980. If you plan on removing any asbestos product, the most reliable way to check would be to test.
